【2025/10/16】No. 4 seed Leylah Fernandez advances to the quarterfinals

Singles Second Round
○ Leylah Fernandez (CAN)  6-1, 6-4  ● Dalma Galfi (HUN)

■Light rain fell intermittently at the start of the match, prompting the chair umpire to pause play several times while waiting for conditions to improve. Even with the interruptions at crucial moments, Fernandez remained unfazed. “There were a few rain delays, but I was able to stay focused,” she said. She took control of the match early on, winning the first five games in a row.

■In the second set, Galfi raised her level and the match became more competitive, but Fernandez never gave up control of the match. “I stayed positive and kept executing my game plan—that was key,” she explained. She mixed in high balls to deal with Galfi’s powerful shots and capitalized on any weak returns with her trademark quick timing. “The most important thing was believing in myself and my speed,” Fernandez said. “If I move fast and hit early, I can create chances,” she added referring to the style of play that defines her game.

■This match marks Fernandez’s first visit to Osaka in six years, since she last competed in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in 2019. “The people in Osaka are so warm and welcoming. Everyone is cheerful and happy. Being in such a positive atmosphere makes me want to play well,” she said.
